Introduction
Kuwait
is a small country, among the Arabian Gulf Countries, which has
a historical background extending to
centuries. Archaeological records reveal that even two thousand
years before Christ Failaka, which is one of the nine islands
of Kuwait, was having inhabitants. According to these records,
the people who lived in that island were following the traditions
and life style of Greek culture. The history of modern Kuwait began from middle
of 18th century. In the Year 1756 Kuwait became an independent
society and Sheikh Sabah Bin Jaber became its first Amir. Since
then Kuwait began business relationship with the outside World.
Main business then was fishing and collecting pearls from the
sea. Since the inception of Kuwait in 1756, the Sabah family
ruled Kuwait and raised it to the level of a developed welfare
State. In the Year 1938 discovery of oil in the island of Burgan
had turned out to be a milestone in the history of Kuwait. Even
though oil was discovered in the 1938, its production began only
in 1946 after the Second World War. With the production of oil
began on a large scale, several job opportunities were brought
in and many people from different countries entered Kuwait seeking
job in the oil fields. The production of oil brought Kuwait one
of the rich countries in the World. In the Year 1961 Kuwait was
declared to be a complete free Nation and in the same year itself
it became a member of Arab League. In 1963 Kuwait was accepted as a member of United Nations.
Beginning of PCK
By the beginning of 1950s many people started
entering Kuwait from India, especially from Kerala among whom
majority were Christians from Central Travancore. From the year
1954 Pentecostal believers also started coming to Kuwait in search
of their livelihood. Though their intention was of a livelihood
the believers kept burning the mantle of the spiritual truth,
they knew and experienced in their home land, even in this wilderness
of extreme climatic conditions. Initially the very few members
worshiped their Lord with an inter denominational gathering known
as The Kuwait Town Malayalee Congregation (KTMCC) in the National
Evangelical Church, Kuwait (NECK). By 1965 many Pentecostal believers
arrived to Kuwait. They met together and conducted prayer meetings
occasionally. On such occasions the believers used to seriously
discuss possibility of starting a Pentecostal worship service.
On his way back from Europe Pastor A.C. Thomas
of the then Ceylon Pentecostal Mission (CPM) visited Kuwait at
the invitation of his relatives lived in Kuwait. He conducted
prayer meetings in the residences and a brother by name Samuel
from Tamil Nadu took water baptism at the hand of Pastor Thomas
in the Arabian Sea. This was the first visit of a Pentecostal
Pastor and the first known baptism in Kuwait.
Mrs. A.C. Mathews from Kumbanad (mother of
Bro. M. Mathews), during her visit to Kuwait in December 1965,
encouraged the believers to start a regular worship meeting and
thus a weekly meeting was started in January 1966 at the residence
of Bro. George Mathews (Punalur). As the believers increased,
the meeting was shifted to the NECK premises in 1967. Bro. George
Mathews led the meetings. The day chosen for the worship meeting
was Saturday evening. Since then this group was named and known
as Pentecostal Church of Kuwait (PCK).
On their way back from USA, Pastor K.E. Abraham,
the then President of The Indian Pentecostal Church of God (IPC)
and Pastor George Varghese visited Kuwait in late 1968 and conducted
special meetings in the NECK premises and prayer meetings at
the residences. This was a great boost for the believers and
Pentecostals were recognized as a force in the Christian community
of Kuwait.
Recognition by I.P.C.
Even though
the majority of the believers belonged to The Indian Pentecostal
Church of God (IPC), initially
this Church was an independent church. With the increase of believers,
it was strongly felt to join with an established Pentecostal
organization. Accordingly, in the general body meeting of the
church conducted on 26th February 1972 it was decided to join
with The Indian Pentecostal Church of God and continue as its
local church in Kuwait. IPC leadership was informed of this decision
of the general body who accepted this church as its local unit
in Kuwait with its name as “IPC – Pentecostal Church of Kuwait”.
Ministers
Early 1969 Pastor P.M. Philip was invited
to Kuwait during his Gulf tour and conducted several public and
cottage meetings. At a special meeting during this time Pastor
P.M.Philip ordained Bro. George Mathews (Punalur), Bro. P.Y.
Baby (Punthala) and Bro. M.P. Philip (Kollakadavu) to conduct
the services of the Church.
With the increase of believers it had become
necessary to have a full time Minister. This need was informed
to IPC General Council at their head quarters in Kumbanad who
appointed Pastor T.K. Philip (Venmoney) as the first full time
pastor of P.C.K. Pastor T.K. Philip took charge of the church
in April 1975. The tenure of a full time pastor is three years.
