Jesus
said "Suffer
little children come unto me, and forbid them not; for of
such is
the Kingdom of God"
Luke 18:16
Introduction
Sunday
School is now a worldwide movement. As some one has described,
the heart of a child is like a blank paper, and when given to
an artist, will be painted as a beautiful picture. Whereas in
the hands of an immoral and corrupt person, it will be spoiled
and thrown into the waste-bin. This reveals the fact that in
order to get molded in to a good, civilized and cultured generation,
the small children are to be trained accordingly. The root cause
of the present day unrest around the world is due to the lack
of proper training of our young ones. The motto of Sunday School
is to train the children in the way that they should go.
The present Sunday School generation is deeply
indebted to Robert Raikes, who is known as the father of the
Sunday School movement. He originally started it in England in
1780 with the help of Rev. Thomas Stock, and later it spread
all over the world.
The history of Sunday school activities in
the Indian Pentecostal churches is as old as the history of the
churches itself. Soon after the formation of the Pentecostal
churches during the 1930s, Sunday School had also started with
the aim of training the younger generation. In 1960, Pastor K.J.
Samuel, the architect of IPC Sunday School Association had initiated
to form the IPC 'Sunday School Samajam'. He was its first President.
Under the care of Pastor K.E. Abraham, the founder of India Pentecostal
Church of God, Sunday School movement had flourished. Later it
was known as - the IPC Sunday School Association, which is now
spread world-wide among the IPC churches. Glory to God for raising
up dedicated and far-sighted servants of God who gave leadership
to the Sunday School movement from time to time.
It’s beginning
The Pentecostal Church of Kuwait, was the first Pentecostal Church
in Kuwait to start the Sunday School activities. It was inaugurated
on 14th December 1973, by the late Pastor P.M. Philip during
his visit to Kuwait.
Initially the classes were conducted in a
believer’s house with 35 children and 4 teachers. We are grateful
to our talented and dedicated teachers, whose altruistic services,
with an in-sight that 'today's Sunday School is tomorrow's church',
are behind the growth of this movement. Our Lord was gracious
enough to bless our Sunday School and increase its strength every
year. We had 130 students and 19 teachers during pre-invasion
time. Though it is titled as “Sunday” School, classes are being
held on Friday, which is a weekend holiday in this part of the
world.
We have a Sunday School council which consists
of,
The Pastor as the Patron,
Church's Secretary as ex-officio member,
A nominated Parent representative and
All the teachers
Unfortunately our Sunday School Activities
came to a standstill, due to the Iraqi invasion on 2nd August
1990. After the liberation of Kuwait, many of the teachers could
not
return and some of them even left Kuwait to USA and Canada. Most
of them are continuing in the Lord's ministry in one way or the
other and few have entered eternal Glory after their ministry.
The righteous God through this Sunday School movement, will reward
all those who had labored for Him.
The believers who returned to Kuwait after
the liberation, restarted our Sunday School activities in February
1992 with a handful of students. The Lord who would not despise
the small beginnings, have showered His blessings and increased
the strength of the Sunday School. Presently we have 20 teachers
and 145 students studying in twelve classes, from the age group
of 3 to 18 years.
Sunday School is now conducted in a
rented auditorium from 7.45am to 9.00am on every Friday. The
first thirty minutes is set apart for the singing session and
the next 45 minutes is devoted for teaching in separate classrooms.
We consider that every child is important
to us and they are a unique creation of God. Our endeavor is
to plant the word of God firmly in their heart and equip them
to live godly in this world.
The syllabus is prepared and published by
the IPC Sunday School Association. Some other relevant scriptural
books are used for infants to make the classes lively.
We conduct scripture exam, verses & music
competitions for each class prior to the closing of every year.
The 1st, 2nd & 3rd prize winners are given suitable prizes on the Sunday School Anniversary
Day.
God Almighty enabled us to extend help to
many deserving students in India. We also sponsored the printing
of the Sunday School textbooks, supported the gospel mission
fields in different parts of our home land and distributed Bibles
to the unreached areas.
Bro. KM. Abraham is our Sunday
School Head Master since 1998.
Conclusion
We give
all glory and honor to our heavenly Father who guided us for
the last thirty years victoriously in bring up a young
generation for the Lord through this ministry in this foreign
land. We humbly ask every one’s prayer for this ministry in
the coming days so that God may raise up young people to stand
for Him in this present world.
